Course Description
BALANCING THE BADGE (CIRCLE OF LIFE):
Balancing the Badge (Circle of Life) is a holistic approach toward balancing your law enforcement career for all recent academy graduates, officers in the middle of their careers, those considering retirement, retirees, as well a HPD civilians. Students will participate in the following:
- Create a financial and life wealth plan to integrate your values and priorities of a career, family, and spiritual well being.
- Learn how to test drive your retirement before you leave.
- Create life wealth by balancing the badges to identify your priorities, values, and goals.
- How to give yourself a pay raise by creating a budget and learning debt reduction techniques.
- Learn eight steps to become debt free.
- Estate Planning, including the importance of having proper beneficiaries, will, trusts and what your family needs to know document.
- Social Security – 40 quarters, awareness of penalties of exceeding annual earnings prior to social security’s definition of full retirement age, and discuss WEP Windfall Elimination Provision.
- Medicare – difference between Medicare Supplement vs Advantage plans. Define Medicaid and qualifications.
- Attention to health insurance costs when considering retirement.
- RMD – mandatory Required Minimum Distribution at age 73.
- Taxes – how withdrawals from qualified plans (ex. IRA, 457, DROP), affect Taxes, Medicare parts B & D & Social Security tax.
- Risk tolerance – Learn how to align your personal and investment portfolio risk tolerance.
- COLA – how to calculate how much you receive each year.
- Investing – Deferred Comp, IRA rollover, Traditional and Roth
- Scenarios for classified pension plans: plan 1 prior (10/09/04), and plan 2 after (10/09/04), and how they work.
- Spreadsheet scenarios of retirement fund longevity projections.
- Long term care options, life insurance, define fixed and variable annuities, identity theft.
- Reference book: Balancing the Badge to Made a Difference: What every law enforcement professional should know about managing money and life.
